The Night Before the Night Before Thanksgiving

Dearest Philthadelphian Phriends,

One thought, and one thought alone has been dominating our minds the last half-week, and despite the title of this post, it has nothing to do Ben Franklin's nominee for our national symbol. The thought, my friends, is: Why is it so goddamned cold in the Pacific Northwest? Last Friday night it snowed about 4 inches in as many hours, and it was actualy quite pretty when we woke up the next morning:

But since then we've had single digit windchills every single day. Apparently it hasn't been this cold here since the late 80's, and this is more snow than Bellingham has ever received before Thanksgiving. Oh yeah, it's a La Nina winter alright! And, fair enough, we (or at least I) did beg the snow gods to let us have it. Snow, yes please. Thor's frosty windhammer beating down our doors and chapping our brains, no thanks.

Have we brought this cold weather with us from Philadelphia? We couldn't help but notice that it was in the mid fifties there on Friday...but remember what it was like in Philly last year?

And before then, I was in Madison...

...so maybe I brought it with me.

Anyway, the point is, it's cold. And yet, despite the frosty trials and tribulations, we've still managed to have a lot of fun while waiting for our snow tires to be installed. F'rinstance, there's nothing like a couple peanut buster parfaits to warm the insides and shellack one's teef with fudgey goodness:

I guess the only good thing about the cold is that it isn't raining, which causes the effing sunroof on my car to leak onto the passenger seat! The milk-of-human-kindness story here, which will make this a full-circle holiday tale, is that the mechanic not only drove to my work to pick up my car, he left his own car for me to drive while it's being serviced! Talk about collateral! Can you imagine this going on in South Philly? That's just the kind of granola-fueled customer service y'all would expect out here in the PNW, and it really does warm the heart (his seat heaters are better than mine, too).

So now that we have a new car, we're thinking of making a couple Home Depot and plant nursery runs, just to get the really messy, smelly stuff, ya know? The loosely bound 40 pound bags of manure and sand, that kind of thing. Of course, I can't take Michal in a hardware store without her getting all hot and bothered about turning the basement into a terrarium, or a stained glass blowing factory. Sure enough, here she was on Sunday turning the basement mud room into a sewing/beading/denim jacket bedazzling den:

It's going to be fantastico, you'll see. And we hope that you're all excited about bedazzled x-mas gifts!

It's coming up on the night before Thanksgiving, so I'm going to shut this thing down before I have to think of another title. We miss you all! Happy Thanksgiving!

P.S. - We forgot to mention that the Boob once again took to the skies from our back deck. Having mastered tripedalism, she's been looking for new challenges and thought she might give two limbs a go. Instapoll: Should we get her another cat for company, or a parachute?

12 Days Till Turkey

Wonderful friends, adorable dogs & brilliant cats....

I am missing you all and writing you from sunny Chicago!

So close, yet so far away...

I am on the eve of our plane ride back home to the northwest, and feeling a little bittersweet about heading west instead of east.

Auntie Mary and I are here in the windy city because we went to my Auntie Jacqueline's 50th birthday last night, which was really fun!

We've been eating - somewhat nonstop - since we arrived here.  Friday night was at a delicious and wild place called "Sunda" which completely knocked our socks off!  Sort of a combination between Momofuku and that awesome sushi place on South St. that we all know and love.

And then today, the food continued as we ate our way through bloody marys and omlettes for breakfast, followed by a mound of deep dish pizza for dinner! In between these meals we headed to the contemporary art museum and the art institute of chitown to walk off our food babies.  Both - amazing!

It's been a great weekend to be here.

So a quick report on Halloween....

The Dunn household was visited by some superfun trick or treaters... and we liked them so much that we took them to our favorite restaurant in the 'ham - a place we like to call The Pepper Sisters!

We left T at home to deal with the rest of the trick or treaters, but all she wanted to do was watch the printer, in case some paper was sent through the inkjet while we were gone, stuffing our faces with green chiles and tortillas!

We are getting very excited for the next few holidays out here, and just hope T likes the reindeer costume we got for her.  There may be some sedation involved... if ya know what I mean.  And I think you do!

We miss you all like crazy!!

Darien Street Spookiness

In addition to about six trick-or-treaters, we had some special visitors to help celebrate the holiday!

John Mackenzie had his regular shindig, and it was hopping. Matt and Michael meandered by in penguin suits (the tux, not the animal), and John Isenhower was an absolutely gorgeous princess! I did not attend as a dentist knocked me out and removed my wisdom teeth on Friday and my jaw was the size of... (side note: I just googled "large jaw" to see if anything would pop up to help me in my description, and apparently there are many websites dedicated to a fetish wherein men are attracted to women with a "large, square, well-defined jaw." Hmm.) Anyhoo, I wasn't in party mode, but 725 South Darien contributed to the holiday spirit with some spoooooky decorations: lights and a pumpkin and of course homemade cheesecloth ghosts - thanks, Martha Stewart Living!

A Few Good Pics That Must See the Light of Day!

So... there was a "severe weather alert" this weekend.  And just wanted you all to know that... we are TOTALLY and COMPLETELY -- OKAY.  It was a little sprinkly and slightly breezy, and mostly sunny.  ?

So, what's the word on the street for Halloween this weekend?  Anybody having a costume party?  Courtney...?

You know, I've been meaning to post some of these pictures from the summertime -- because they are just so good!  So, I will post them here.  Because.... they are just cuteness maximus:

and...

We are going to beddy bye for now -- but hope to hear from y'all soon!

Where to Begin?

One, I don't think I have seen the Tuckers since your wedding. I was glad to see them in the ongoing wedding celebration party photo because I was starting to be concerned that they were just a figment of my imagination, along with Michal and Paul! Inhaling all the house construction dust and debris starts to addle the brain over time, you know.

Two, the house is being stuccoed even
as I write! How exciting!!! It was a spontaneous decision, instigated by the fact that Chris and Colleen are getting their house done at the same time, by the same company. There was a serious meeting between the DeSilvis-Campbell and the Clancy-McCormick contingents to discuss colors. After much negotiation (and confusion as depending on location of the sun they all looked exactly the same), we all decided that they get the dark gray, and we get the light.

Three, I am tiling the second floor bathroom. I believe I started this before you left, which means I am moving at a rate of approximately 3/4 of a subway tile a day. It is a new record, and professional tilers have been harassing me for tips on how to prolong their jobs. However, your potential visit in November has lit a "get this finished!" fire within me, so I'm going to up my rate to roughly 10 tiles day in order to complete the job.
Four, I visited my sister in Nicaragua a few weeks ago, and arrived to discover that her freshly adopted Nicaraguan street dog had been hit by a car and was limping horribly. Using my Talula expertise, I assessed the situation and said "Perro medico - inmediatamente!" So to the vet we went, where the poor dog's leg was diagnosed as shattered in about 200 places. He suggested putting her to sleep. I took a deep breath and demanded "Quite la pierna!" (remove the leg), whereupon my three small blonde spanish speaking nieces looked at me in horror and burst into tears. Even the vet was taken aback. However, apparently the dog was returned to them much happier: its tail wags so fiercely that it falls down (it's still learning balance).

(In the background, you'll see the vet, trying to get away from us. As an aside, I marched into his office waving xrays and babbling something about how I couldn't really speak spanish (in terrible spanish) and he looked at me, smiled, and calmly said, "No problem - I speak English. I got my degree from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.")

That's all for now! xo

Does the Party Ever End?

Well friends, it seems that our wedding celebration, almost three months to the day, is finally coming to an end. Here's a shot of our Seattle party in September, which the Tuckers so graciously attended:

They said they were going to give us their air miles as a fifteenth wedding gift, but apparently the transfer agreement has gotten lost in the mail...

Anyway, we were hoping to stretch this thing out until 2011, maybe extend the tax benefits into the next year, too, but a little celebration fatigue among our loved ones is entirely understandable. So, tonight is the last of our reception/parties, this time in Burlington, WA, for all the family and friends from the Skagit Valley area who couldn't make it to Philly for the July hitchin'. I think there is still room at table 14, so if you hop on a plane right now--I mean RIGHT NOW--you could still make it. Great Aunt Millie is waiting to tell you about her 37 cats and hasn't changed the battery in her hearing aid for 10 years, but she's really such a dear. A little smelly, but a dear. And God, what a pineapple upside down cake...

Seriously though, Patsy has done a marvelous job planning the party and decorating the hall, and it should be great fun.

We just wish all y'all Philthadelphians were here to join us. To bring that special kind of cheesesteak love you just don't find anywhere else. Wit whiz.

Much love from the three-six-oh!

Update on the Boob's butt

So, you may all remember that after the Boob's big surgery last winter, her butt hair grew in black!

We thought this would be permanent, but just this month.... we noticed, that things are getting a little salt and pepperish in the Boob's trunk:

Sort of exciting.  The white may be making a comeback!

The old Boob has been missing her Darien Street perch immensely.  But, we just started cracking open the window in our kitchen, and now...... she's found a new perch!
